Costa Rica, independent from Spain since 1821, has a per capita income exceeds 8 thousand/year, which is twice that of all other countries in Central America except Panama. It’s land area is approximately the size of West Virginia and has a population of almost 4 million. Mestizo (mixed European and Amerindian), including whites, make up 94% of the population, followed by black (3%), and Chinese (1%).
