Introduction
Lettuce originated in the Mediterranean area and was brought to Latin America with the European colonization.
Lettuce is used in Costa Rica for salads. A more traditional salad in Costa Rica is sliced cabbage and tomato. The large tourist industry in Costa Rica might be the reason for the increase in lettuce production.
Boston or bib lettuce is the most common type of lettuce grown.
Production
In Costa Rica, lettuce is often grown under row cover to protect the foliage from moisture during the rainy season.
